White Hills - Heads on Fire

If Julian Cope wants to release a remixed version of your debut album and invites you to play your first gig in U.K. opening for him, you definitely did hit the right note. And that's exactly what has happened to White Hills. The music is noise indulged heavy space rock by way of Hawkwind anno 2007. Extremely fuelled with distorted bass, swirling synthesizers and long fuzz fuelled guitar solos. This band for sure knows its roots and still manages to reinvent the space-/krautrock genre. This is not like Ozric Tentacles - no, it's the dark side of your mind when on acid. Most songs are high energy rockers, but then suddenly the band submerges into a 26 minutes psychedelic nightmare ironically called "Don't be Afraid". This record is a pure mindfuck - but what a great fuck it is!

Rip KC – Spinguölf

It’s hard to describe the beautiness of this music – and even harder to describe the music in itself! This Spanish trio plays some kind of laid back psychedelic rock with funky guitars and jazzy drums. They started out almost fifteen years ago as a hardcore punk band but has developed into one of the most trippy and inventive bands I’ve head in a long time. I can listen to this record over and over again and still get intrigued by the pure beauty of the dreamy soundscabes they deliver. It’s also hard to compare this band to anything else because they don’t really sound like any other bands in my book. What’s even more surprising is that they suddenly burst out in 1.20 min of psychedelic punk rock in the song: “Punk is Dead” – hell yeah, punk is so dead! Many of the songs are bound together by short trippy interludes which never seems misplaced. The last song called: “The Tree of Science” is a slow-floating masterpiece ending with a barking dog – and then as you think it’s all over a really freaked-out hidden track is revealed. Oh yeah, I want more, more, more ...

Shrooms 'n' Coke, but no rock 'n' roll

Friday 16th was a diffucult choise between High on Fire at Loppen and Black Debbath at Stengade 30. Well, we ended up eating the rest of my liberty caps and just listening to music and staring into the thin air. Fortunately Mads was there and only drank beer so after some hours we went out. There's a new club opened just across my street called Jolene, so we went there and what a surprise! A big dark room with strange colours and nice people.

Anyway, they closed at midnight because of too many complaints from the stupid nabours living in my street. And what's even more shitty is that the place has decided to close down this weekend. It all started with a big bang. The release party had almost 700 people attending so they occupied the whole street and the cops came several times because of complaints. This weekend I suppose they will end the whole story with another clash!? Although not a rock-club it showed out to be a cool place - I should have went there some more! Well, off we went to fucking downtown and hit good old Floss where we met Lars from Heatfarm. Lars got us some coke and then we woke up and had a great trip clubbing all night. But no music ...!

FU MANCHU - Pumpehuset 14/11

God damn, I have had some serious hangovers today. It was a great night and I ended up drinking way to many beers and Gajol together with Pede after the show in his motorcycle workshop. Anyway, the concert was pretty okay. Truckfighters opened and the sound was shitty and not many people had shown up at 9 pm. I had a couple of xmas beers and met up with Jon A. After the break Fu hit the stage and the party began. Sound was better but still not the best, but that's usually how it is a Pumpehuset. Great set with new and old songs. Saturn III was the highligt for me - great psychedelic rocker. Luckily I didn't have to go to work today ...

RADIO MOSCOW | Radio Moscow

Radio Moscow is two 21 year old dudes playing retro psychedelic blues-rock in the real early 70’ish freaked out way like Orange Sunshine. Parker Griggs handles guitar, drums, percussion and vocals while Luke McDuff plays bass. This record is all about guitar soloing in the extreme wanked-out way high on smoke. If you dig playing air-guitar you’ll be in heaven all 37 minutes. Especially the almost 6 min long “Deep Blue Sea” is pounding heavy yet slow and swampy with slide-guitar and so bluesy it’s hard to believe these guys were born in the mid 80’ies. The record is produced by no other than Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys - actually it’s even recorded in Auerbach’s own studio The Pie Co. It’s a fine piece of retro rock that will warm the hearts of all stoned music freaks who think that lava lamps and blacklight posters is the coolest stuff ever invented.

The Stevenson Ranch Davidians | Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs

This band claims to come from the town Stevenson Ranch near Los Angeles, but I guess they come from outer mind! The band consists of Dwayne, Jessica, Cary and Bryan - four people, but one symbiotic group. This is dripping slow neo-psychedelic stuff in the electrified new weird American way - and it’s damn cool. It’s slow, sloppy, droopy and lazy. This music creeps under the skin and travel through your cochleae too reach the most sensitive parts of your pleasure centre. Much of their music reminds of both The Warlocks and Dead Meadow, but in a less distorted way. The lyrics are delivered in the same drowsy laid back groove almost buried behind the music. It’s a very well produced record with an almost pleasantly polished sound. Gentle, nice and full of good vibes and on the same time it is surprisingly trippy. Especially the last song: “No Tomorrow” is a distortion-drenched sonic freakout. So turn out the lights and make love on your flying carpet – or whatever you may wanna do ...

MUSTASCH at Stengade 30 - Nov. 1th

Because of the Mustasch concert Target Distribution held some kind of release arrangement for the new Monster Magnet at 7pm at Stalingrad upstairs to Stengade. Only 25 people or so turned up and you could win some older albums with MM. They didn't bring the new album!? Anyway, I didn't win shit but I met Kaj and started to drink some strong dark beer. Later Scott turned up and some other guys and we had more beers and a spliff of Kaj's pot - strong shit! The Danish band The Royal Highness was gonna open and they had Lasse from The Hors D'oeuvres as their new guitarist. I was looking forward to that because Lasse is such a great guitarist - and a nice guy. The Royal Highness got a lot of attention when they started out because they had a song written by Alain Johannes and Natasha Shneider. Anyway, the sound was shitty and you could almost not hear Lasse's guitar - too bad. Then Mustasch went on and started out in the usual way. Great band! Had to many beers and when I smoked on another one of Kaj's joint I almost crashed and went home. Luckily I live only 10 min away from Stengade ...

BOHREN and der Club of Gore

Yet another gig by Doomed Denmark. It went down november 2nd at Loppen and turned into another great night. Opener was Danish drone/noise band Chasing Eudaimonia and that was quite all right but not fantastic. Then all lights went out and Bohren entered the stage with only four 25 watt lightbulbs - one in front of each musician - and almost complete darkness! Completely contrary to the concert with Life on Earth. Anyway, the music was great and after a short while almost everybody in front of the stage sat down and just enjoyed the jazzy doom. Hard to describe the music but it was nice to chill out to. I bought the Black Earth album but haven't had time to give it a close listen, but I know it's gonna be very nice.

LIFE ON EARTH! | Live at Loppen

Just got some pix from the concert with Swedish psych-folk band Life on Earth! october 25th at Loppen. Wow, that was a great night. Not many people showed up which was a pity. Opening band was the Danish acid-folk band Delhi Metro with some of the members from former Hjerterka'se. When I arrived I popped 25 liberty caps and soon my head was spinning nicely. Ralph the booker had hired a great guy to do visuals and behind the stage and all the way round was a stretched out screen and four projecters delivered a great psychedelic mindblow. Life on Earth! is Mattias Gustavsson’s (from the Swedish band Dungen) solo project together with some other Swedish freaks (musicians from Dungen, The Works, Town & Country and Mia Doi Todd). Because there was so few people, I could sit on a chair right in front of the soundboard and just enjoy the whole thing high on psilicybine. Great experience ... I really recommend that you give the bands a listen.

DOOMED DENMARK strikes again

My good friend Nils aka Bongz is running his own little booking business. Not that he in any way tries to make a living or even profit from this, he just do it for fun and to get some cool bands to play in Copenhagen. I on the other hand likes to make grafics in Photoshop and therefore I make his flyers and posters for the gigs. I'm really not very good at this, but I try to do my best and hopefully some of the stuff looks okay - even for a professional grafic artist.

On friday Bongz' next arrangement is gonna be Asteroid (S), Graveyard (S) and Sedated Angel (DK). This is a really cool lineup and especially Sedated Angel is gonna be interesting. It's their fist time to do Copenhagen. The venue is called Dragens Hule (Dragons Cave) and is a very small place but with the most psychedelic atmosphere you can imagine. You can drink, smoke cigarettes and marihuanna and do as you like as long as you don't act like a fucker. No need to say, that this is not an official venue - it's actually not official in any way!

SEDATED ANGEL | See the World Through Burning Red Eyes

Sedated Angel claims to be the dirtiest stoner rock band in Denmark – and they must be since there are so few bands left. But that said this 4 track promo actually makes promise of the dirtiest stoner rock ever made in Denmark! The band comes from Kolding/Fredericia and made their first EP back in 2005 without any real notice. To me this is a brand new acquaintance – and a damn good one. Sedated Angel plays fucking heavy stoner rock with lots of killer guitar work. After Gas Giant called it quit and Stefan Krey vanished it’s nice to hear some guys who knows how to make a baby cry. “Burn” is a straight ahead heavy rocker reminding of Ronja and with a twisted ending. The song “Numb” has a nice complex song structure and shifts between being relaxed and aggressive. It’s so cool to hear a band with so competent musicians. It’s a tight 18 wheeler heading out of the door. Yeah, put your brain on the grill and get down with this band. Only real weak point might be the vocals, but that’s the same old, same old with stoner bands. The two guitarists takes turns singing and has quite different voices. I like the style and the rawness so who cares if it’s not pretty voices - and how does pretty fit with dirty anyway?

LEAFLUST - Doomsters gone psychedelic

My friend Scott just sent me an e-mail with the notice: "Far out Swedish band". So I had to see what the fuzz is about. And yes, this is pretty far out to say the least. Three guys from doom band Relic decides to play some more psychedelic music (and smoke some more pot i guess?!). The result is pretty okay as just being rehearsal jams. The song "Acid Whale Rider" is kind of a very far out version of Hawkwind's "Brainstorm" without guitar, but with a shitload of spacy effects. This of course made me check out RELIC as well. Jesucks, this is the doomiest doom I have heard in a long time. No hope - absolute despair. Give it a try ...

The Woodrose familie ...

Thursday night Baby Woodrose is gonna play at Loppen. They released the album "Chasing Rainbows" on Bad Afro Records october 22. and held a really cool release party at Café Sveik. Only problem was, that is was also the first really cold night in Copenhagen and the place was so crowded that I almost froze my dick off hanging outside most of the time. But the Czech beers was great! The record is more back to the basic 60's sound than the previlous album and has a really nice vibe. Baby Woodrose is the mindchild of Lorenzo Woodrose aka Guf who used to be in the freak-machine On Trial back in the day together with bassist Anders. Beside On Trial and Baby Woodrose Lorenzo has also released drug indulged stuff as Pandemonica and Spids Nøgenhat. Anyway, all that you can read about if you google a bit.

Baby Woodrose at Myspace

So whats the fuzz about a Woodrose family? Well, opening for Baby W tomorrow is Aron. Aron is the solo work of former On Trial guitarist Morten Aron who also played guitar with Spids Nøgenhat. He has released a couple of solo albums and tomorrow is actually the release gig for his new album "Djævlens Horn". On stage tomorrow Aron will be joined by Nicolai Vilhelm Tell and Hobitten who plays guitar in On Trial and freaked with Lorenzo and Aron in the one-off project Dragontears.

Aron at Myspace

Dragontears was all about making an album in short time and record the stuff right away. Kind of a session like Desert Sessions or Swamp Sessions. Everything was mixed by Lorenzo and soundman Ralpf Rjeily on acid (so they said). The record "2000 Micrograms from Home" gained high critcal acclaims and was named as one of the best albums in 2007 by Walter from Roadburn.

Dragontears at Myspace | Interview at Roadburn | Ralph at Myspace

Beside all this Lorenzo also produced and played drums in The Setting Son who released the selftitled album earlier this year. The record is recorded at Black Tornado studio by Ralph and is out on Bad Afro Records as well as Baby W, Dragontears and the live record by On Trial.

The Setting Son at Myspace

A live record with On Trial? Yes, after they almost blew the tent out at last years Gutter Island Festival at Masnedø Fort the recording by Danish National Radio was streamed and thereafter circulated in the trading society. On Trial chose to release the recording earlier this year as a vinyl only limited to 500 copies. Gutter Island is an institution in Danish underground music and also Baby Woodrose has put out a "Live at Gutter Island" vinyl only.

To round everything off, also the psyhfolk'ish Nicolay Vilhelm Tell is out with a record called "Mushroom Town" under the name of Nicolai Vilhelm Tell and The Teacompany. Nicolai previously played with Aron and the record is out on the label Orpheus Records which is run by - well, Morten Aron ...

The circle seems to be closed in some way. But hey, Lorenzo also lent his vocal to the project The Freeks by Ruben Romano from Nebula ...

In the beginning ...

Okay, this is the beginning of my blog and I don't have a clue how to start out. The idea is to create a space for fast updated references to music I like. I'm a reviewer for the on-line magazine LowCut and this is gonna be my personal fast-written babbles about anything related to psyched-out music culture. I'll put up some selected reviews from LowCut magazine and try to write about anythig new and interesting I can dig up.

If you want anything reviewed or just have some attention don't hesitate to contact me. I love to hear strange new bands and love demo stuff!

I also fool around with Photoshop dooing some flyers and posters for bands and bookers. I'll post some of the better looking ones for your pleasure ;-)

I dig stonerrock the most, but also adore anything related to the term psychedelia ...
