Torche - Meanderthal

Heavy lightness? One one hand Torche manages to create a wall of heavy and repetitive guitar riffing and one the other hand they manage to lift the music up from the swamp of mainstream sludge. Singer Steve Brooks also sings much more melodic than most of he’s fellow singers of the genre. It’s a genius mix of horror-heavy doomish pop and Melvins inspired circus-stonerrock. There’s also a strange feel of Helmet in the production of drums and guitars in some songs like ie “Sundown”! The whole album is one long suite bound together with sharp precision. In my opinion this is a masterpiece, not only as a Torche album, but also compared to the bunch of heavy riffing epic hardcore stuff as the like of Pelican and so on – this record makes me smile while pushed to the wall by the heaviness. Torche is highly recommended for anyone into anything from funeral doom to geeky post-rock.

The scary truth about America ...

This dude made a mathematical approach to define a Top 20 of records sold in the U.S. The result is scary! There's a spreadsheet for download where one can see all data. Even though great rock albums is ranked high it's scary to see that americans buy so many records with shit like Shania Twain, Gart Brooks, Kid Rock and MC Hammer. Anyway, interesting data ...

Diagonal ... still waiting

One of my biggest and nicest surprises at this years Roadburn Festival was Diagonal from U.K. I just stumbled upon their name at the Italian Perkele website, but as I don't understand italian I can only guess that something is going on about that promised release at Rise Above Records. The 7" is out and that is fine and all that jazz ... but hey, the album - the full album, man?!

Anyway, wisit their MySpace and listen to the Roadburn concert - or go to VPRO ... or visit the Roadburn website. There's also a concert for download at Diagonal's own website. So there's no excuse, you got to hear some of this great stoner-jazz.

Darker my Love - New Release

"You turn it on. Turn it up. And the feedback-filled guitars of “Northern Soul” instantly wash over you like an old friend. The pounding rhythms get down into your bones, making it impossible to sit still. And those melodies…they stick with you for days. “Baby, you’ve got me talking words…” There’s a new sheen at play here, courtesy of studio guru, Dave Cooley (Silversun Pickups, J Dilla), allowing the sunburnt harmonies to part through the sonic squall like an indie rock Moses. A sophomore record in every sense of the word, 2, will be released August 5, 2008."

Ahymsa ...

Ahymsa is apparently unsigned ...?!? I don't get it, it's really cool shit.

"All we've ever wanted to do is play. We never wanted to hark back to the "golden age" of guitar music or emulate the past actions of our idols. We set out to experiment and to create a sound that interested us and encouraged our audience to share our vision of music unconfined. It wasn't that we were deliberately trying to be different as much as we found no inspiration in the mundane. We drew on an eclectic range of influences to create a progressive hard rock hybrid, an indefinable yet distinct and listenable sound that evolved free from the shackles of the generic. And people seemed to enjoy it. Now, after nearly four years of gigging, touring and recording, we find ourselves experienced, professional, motivated and in need of exposure. All we've ever wanted to do is play. Now we want to be heard."

Elektrohasch fucking rules ...

"THE KINGS OF FROG ISLAND crash landed the game during the summer heat of 2003. Mark Buteaux (Guitars) and Dodge Watson (Percussions) had laid down three or four open ended grooves together at Amphibia Sound just for the hell of it. Enter Josiah front man Mat Bethancourt (Guitars, Vocals and Bass) to work on some demo recordings with Mark, The Kings Of Frog Island are born. Drawing on a collective passion for cult movie soundtracks and mammoth riffs the Kings had some high times making this, their eponymous debut album. Stashed full of heavy psych rock and fragile laments to love, life and the eternal sleep. This album is truly a rollercoaster ride across the mountains of madness, beyond the beyond to the shores of Frog Island and the gates of Amphibia. Come take a trip ..."

"The Kings are now putting the finishing touches to the long awaited follow up to their self titled 2005 debut album. "The Kings Of Frog Island II" follows a natural progression through the world of tripped out stoned jams and the explosive anthemic hits set up on the first album."
