Pirate Love - Black Vodoun Space Blues

The name is without doubt taken from the classic L.A.M.F. record by Heartbreakers, but luckily this isn't just another Thunders rip-off band. The CD starts with a blast of true garage punk with gritty guitars and cool organ in the back and a sing-along chorus of "The Lonely Streets". Halfway through the record the band moves into more strange territories and gets quite acidic. This is when the music become interesting! Actually the record has a quite strange almost dreamy horror like feel and some of this psyched stuff may be because it amongst others was mixed by Emil Nikolaisen of Serena Maneesh. The song "Slumber Blues" starts out like a bit ordinary punkabilly tune, but hey, then it moves to a quite cool slow rock'n'roll groove and gets pretty psyched out. In all the band takes elements from 60's garage punk, surf, rockabilly and psyche and fucks it all up in a big cup of strange tea. Although the band can be compared to much of the Gutter style music Scandinavia is so overfloated with, this band brings a fresh wind from the pirate sea. MySpace Love Voodoo Rhythm Records

The Long Strides - S/T

Australian The Long Strides for sure dig the mix of The Velvet Underground and Jesus and Mary Chain. Well, the do it well even though there's a giant wave of bands lately giggin' this groove. What I mean is, that The Long Strides battles uphill against bands like the Black Angels and The Warlocks just to name a few. But then again they do it well. The Sound is thick and sticky as tar and not that drowned in feedback as other bands from this genre. Vocals are also more in the foreground and not that drowsy with both male and female lead. But the guitars, well they are for sure drowned in fuzz. Cool record with a few really cool stand-out tracks as "Black Black Smoke" and "Do it again" - especially the latter has a black black groove. The really trippy stuff is also to be found in a song like "Perfect Precription".

Psych is the new black

There's an article in the Danish newspaper Politiken about the new wave of psyche in Denmark. Yes, well come again - they also wrote about this new wave two years ago in Berlingske Tidende - and there was this story in Mojo mentioning Causa Sui some years ago. Anyhoo, read it - not much new, but that's just journalism - jump the wagon ...

MUJERES Y VINOS

Una Provocativa Exposición

Heavy stoned wah-wah

"The late 60’s and early 70’s are a source of inspiration and are reflected in the heavy and downtuned sound this band has to offer. The Machine is a mixture of a wall of guitar fuzz with lots of soloing, both loose and heavy drumming and some steady yet sometimes subtle basswork. The feeling of their music is both bluesy and jazzy, heavy and psychedelic, subtle and overwhelming."

Dungen at Loppen

It's always nice to go see Dungen - or maybe I have to say "It was nice ..." in the future?! Anyway, after a cool afternoon with a visit at Sabrines meeting with Tina, it was time to go to Loppen once again. There was quite a lot of people there - and more swedes than usual. I met Nik after the opening act - the new wunderkids The Telstar Sound Drone - and we smoked a spliff. Then Dungen played a long set with some cool jamming and once again Reine Fiske showed he's completely extrordinaire ...

Here's a clip from Roskilde 2005 and they will be back in 2009 - maybe for the last time? By all means I cannot strongly enough recommend you go see the if the come by!

Baby "Lorenzo" Woodrose Live at Pop Art stage in Second Life

Yes, believe it or not, but Lorenzo played a solo live show in Second Life the other night!?! Nothing wrong with the music, but the animation of the performance is so way out it's almost unbelieveable! Ther's also an interview with Lorenzo.

Miss Chain and The Broken Heels - Lie 7"

Miss Chain & The Broken Heels makes kind of sixties pop reminding you of old movies with girls dancing around wearing long dresses and big wigs. The sound is dominated by the female vocal, but with cool backing harmonies by the "boys". The songs are the kind of teenage bubblegum songs about problems with boyfriends and naive nonsense. But who cares when the voice of Miss Astrid is so charmingly cute you wanna hug your speakers? It's hard not to love the happy grooves of this band ... Miss Chain MySpace Shake Your Ass Records

Leonard Davies - Shit/Black Leather 7"

Leonard Davies is mostly (un)known from lo-fi garage rockers Fallen Men. This double A sided 7" solo is a step forward when it comes to both sound and intensity. This is really compressed simple-as-it-is motorrock with snotty Iggy style vocal and screaching guitar work. The bass is powerfull and groovy. Not much more to say about this record than it's straigh ahead down the rock 'n' roll cliche back alley - "You belong in the shit". Fallen Men MySpace SOPA Delicious

Crystal Stilts and LowCut Radio on a sunday nite

Last night I had the pleasure of being the host with Jens at the LowCut Radio. It’s been down for a while because some stupid technician had to fix something and instead he fucked it up. Jens had to leave after 1,5 hours to go see Cheap Time at Elværket and the guys from Det Knuste Øre had a show with Borbetomagus at Lygten, so I enjoyed myself for two hours and then went over to Loppen to see Crystal Stilts. The concert was quite cool, but far from fantastic! I had expected something more dark and gazing and instead there was this indie looking dude trying to be funny and playing way too loud keyboard. Not that it was a bad show; I was just disappointed in some way. A few songs worked really well being hypnotic and monotonous just the way I wanted. Well, after a Friday with more intense shoegaze at Drone and a really drunk night at Studenterhuset with On Trial doing their best to psyche us out sunday night wasn’t just the day for me to see Crystal Stilts. Oh, I almost forgot, their female drummer Frankie was nice – and did some cool simple drumming.

Heavy Hills - Another MySpace find ...

"To shed all the illusory rights & hesitations of history demands the economy of some legendary Stone Age - shamans not priests, bards not lords, hunters not police, gatherers of paleolithic laziness, gentle as blood, going naked for a sign or painted as birds, poised on the wave of explicit presence, the clockless nowever. All loud on the western front."

Drone - Opening night and 300 liters of free beer

Friday night was the grand opening of this new club called Drone. The concept of the club is supposed to be a place for psychedelic music and the calendar so far seem promising with space rock and kraut rock nights and live music with bands that are a bit more alternative than the usual electronica and indie rock so beloved in Denmark.

Well, to call this place new is kind of wrong as the new owners just took over Apparatet and they haven't changed anything! Same interior, same kind of bartenders and same people as it was before. Nothing new and nothing psychedelic. Where were the blacklight posters, the liquid lights and the body painted female tenders??? The only new stuff was the choice of music and this wasn't even that psychedelic in the couple of hours I was there. Actually I would call it pretty standard alternative rock - you know, Stooges, Ramones, Velvet Underground and Joy Division, nothing they wouldn't play at Isola or Floss or wherever. Some people that stayed till later said they also played Can and Hawkwind later - but hey, was that it? So much fuzz about this new club and then nothing new?!

Anyway, it was the opening night and I therefore hope that this bummer was just to please the mainstream crowd attracted because of the free beers. Well, there was a band called Death Valley Sleepers playing the small stage upstairs in the backroom and they did pretty good. Tobias Winberg and another young guy with Fender Jaguars shoegazing and making pretty noise, cool bassist playing hollowbody, intense drummer and a nice female frontline attack called Kristina Romby doing drowsy drowned vocals. Actually I think that her cool looks and sexy way to handle a tambourine was the most psychedelic expression of the two hours I spent at Drone. Not that this band was anything unusual, they just did a good job and made me even more ready to go see Crystal Stilts tomorrow.

I left to go see On Trial at Studenterhuset and that was a whole different story, more about this later ...

The Pancakes

I think MySpace is the most amazing plaze ever when it comes to discover new music. Today I again found a strange and interesting band called The Pancakes. These freeks are from Germany and mixes a Spanish psychedelic trip with some kind of really acidious pop with all kind off strange stuff mixed in. Cool, damn cool.

And theres also a link to their "record label" called Kerntonshall - or what. Really fucked up site, but with lots of music to download. Anyway, pay them a visit.

I'm listening to C.A. Quintet : Trip Thru Hell and thats some crazed psychedelia from '69. Very, very strange record with hints to both paisley and dark, hauntet lysergia. A very varied record and a true gem. I got it thru Rockadrome mentioned earlier.

Roadburn Festival News

The running order for thursday and friday is now ready. Looks pretty cool for my taste. Not too many bad overlaps so far. Thursday night is gonna be great with a monster long set from Motorpsycho and then White Hills closing the ball. Only serious overlap thursday is Amon Düül II and Church of Misery, but it's only 15 min. Saint Vitus is fully overlapping Dragontears on the friday. I have to see Saint Vitus but will have to leave for Dragontears. There's also a net blog for Roadburn Magazine but it's still a pilot.

Behind the cover of Ramones

As a hangout at Max's Kansas City George Du Bose became associated with New Wave music after he began speculative work with the fledgling B52s and made the great covers for their first two albums. He has photographed and designed over 300 album covers, collecting 18 gold and platinum albums for groups as diverse as the REM, The Go Gos, Melissa Etheridge, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane. The Ramones have commissioned him to photograph or design their last nine covers. Cool pix - you know them all. Fun stories about Madonna and stuff.
