Musiktorvet

Copenhagen saw Stengade go down financially (and because of complete fuck up by the cokehead staff!!). Amager Bio and Café Kino is now fronted as the new Copenhagan music Mecca. Well, lets see?

Drone - Opening night and 300 liters of free beer

Friday night was the grand opening of this new club called Drone. The concept of the club is supposed to be a place for psychedelic music and the calendar so far seem promising with space rock and kraut rock nights and live music with bands that are a bit more alternative than the usual electronica and indie rock so beloved in Denmark.

Well, to call this place new is kind of wrong as the new owners just took over Apparatet and they haven't changed anything! Same interior, same kind of bartenders and same people as it was before. Nothing new and nothing psychedelic. Where were the blacklight posters, the liquid lights and the body painted female tenders??? The only new stuff was the choice of music and this wasn't even that psychedelic in the couple of hours I was there. Actually I would call it pretty standard alternative rock - you know, Stooges, Ramones, Velvet Underground and Joy Division, nothing they wouldn't play at Isola or Floss or wherever. Some people that stayed till later said they also played Can and Hawkwind later - but hey, was that it? So much fuzz about this new club and then nothing new?!

Anyway, it was the opening night and I therefore hope that this bummer was just to please the mainstream crowd attracted because of the free beers. Well, there was a band called Death Valley Sleepers playing the small stage upstairs in the backroom and they did pretty good. Tobias Winberg and another young guy with Fender Jaguars shoegazing and making pretty noise, cool bassist playing hollowbody, intense drummer and a nice female frontline attack called Kristina Romby doing drowsy drowned vocals. Actually I think that her cool looks and sexy way to handle a tambourine was the most psychedelic expression of the two hours I spent at Drone. Not that this band was anything unusual, they just did a good job and made me even more ready to go see Crystal Stilts tomorrow.

I left to go see On Trial at Studenterhuset and that was a whole different story, more about this later ...

Support Stengade 30

The cool venue Stengade 30 is having serious financial problems. They might have to close down. That would be a disaster since Lades is also having problems payin the rent downtown near Strøget in Copenhagen. Maybe Cph will loose two venues for the alternative rock! Damned country - the danes sucks for mainstream stadium rock and no good danish pop.

Heatfarm @ The Rock

This saturday Heatfarm played at The Rock supporting Riffelsyndikatet. We were there - as usual - we the old friends. Me and my girlfriend accidentally ended up at Floss before the show and there the old fuckers were! Nice, nice, nice - if the world is going down, Floss will survive. That place never ever changes. Mads made a pretty strange stage appearance letting people who bought a record almost fuck his head up. I filmed the show with my new Flip camcorder and it turned out quite good. Anyway, it was a cool night and Riffelsyndikatet was a nice new acquaintance to me.

Great fun watching pole fitness ...

Orpheus Label Night

After a couple of not so great concerts like Lack at Apperatet with way too many people and a realy shitty, lousy punkevening at Blågards Medborgerhus, yesterday at Studenterhuset was another fantastic night in the name of psyche! The evening was called Orpheus Label Night and featured Lotus Krokus, Nicolai Vilhelm Tell and Aron and the Blackbeacon Orkestra. Lotus Krokus opened with their cute and naive folkrock. They had added flute and steel guitar with fuzz and wah which was pretty cool. Yet, the music is a little too naive and dumb to really touch your soul. Next up was Nicolai Tell and we were pushed a little more in the rock'ish way, but still with the pretty naive and hippie like expresseion. Good performance, but not anything that moved the ground after the last tune. But then ... then the earth moved. Aron entered and gave a completely convincing lession in how psyched out horror folk has to sound. Arons lyrics is fucking brilliant and almost genious in their simple form. In the band was Henrik from On Trial on guitar making waves with his acidic playing. Garage Claus smacked up the drums and added some way out backing vocal. Soulshaking performance ... Causa Sui freaking @ Daemonens Port

Causa Sui is a magnificient danish band with some really talented musicians. They started out as a quartet and put out two great records as so. They made an astonishing performance at last years Roadburn Fest and this year they are gonna play Duna Jam. They then skipped the singer and went on as a trio.

Last night was the first time for them to appear in a new form - and it was to be kind of a surprise. This gig was to be held at Daemonens Port, a small underground venue located in the basement of a company building out at fucking Amager. Fucking cool place with absolutely no restrictions in any way - but also without a toilet! A big bar, cheap beers, cool atmosphere and a great stage with draped red carpets around. Way to go! Musically this was a surprise. I had been told that they were gonna have sax and keyboards added - and they also har a percussionist. The first long set was almost pure impro jazz-rock and they really showed of their admiration for Miles Davis. The sax was really cool and blended in fine with the rest of the band. Keyboards were mainly spaced out synth and Jonas Munk made a lot of strange guitar effects with a laptop on stage.

Second set was more Causa Sui as we know them. Blistering heavy psychedelic rock, but still with sax, synth and percussion. Wow, what a great, great performance from this band - and to experience this at a place like Daemonens Port with mayby 60 people present. After that we went to the shitty Jaguaren and got kicked out when they closed

Kultur Shock @ Global

Friday night we went to this place called Global just next to Sgt. Hans Torv. It's venue for world music and that night they had the US band Kultur Shock on the bill. Opening band was local J S Fuck and the Hippies From Hell. God damn cool name for a band. The music was a strange mix of mostly punk, but with elements of strange stuff like wah-wah solos, growl and funky garage rhytms. Actually the one guitarist is Cristian Olesen and the drummer is Troels Drasbech from the great band The New Artless Creatures. The main man Sune Køter is sharply dressed in white shirt and red tie and their logo is very "nazi" like. They had some really cool visuals and a great performance. Actually the venue was pretty cool with a high cieling and therefore lots of space for visuals behind the stage. Only problem was lack of atmosphere and a pretty annoing women in the door - and the beers were too expensive for a place like this. Anyway, the mainliners this evening was Kultur Shock and although they spell Kultur the danish way they are from Seattle. The style was balkan-punk and even though they had great energy and enegetic pulsating rhytmns I found them pretty boring half way throug the set. So I left! But hey, they are a cool band if you dig that kind of music. Kultur Shock J S Fuck ... The New Artless Creatures Global

Ska, ska, skanking ...

I haven't been to a real ska concert since The Selecter at Loppen in '99 or something - well, maybe Duck Soup/ Napoleon Solo a couple of times ... Fuck it! What I wanna say is, that last night we went to see The Slackers at something called at some place next to Kapelvej Medborgerhus. Didn't have a clue about the place nor the band. The venue turned out to be really great for a place not meant for concerts, the band also turned out to be great, and there was a lot of people ...? Pretty surprising in many ways. The Slackers seems to be a kind of legendary ska band out of New York, and there they were - right in the middle of Nørrebro. The performed really cool, seemed happy and played a couple of encores. After that we went to Bumzen - that was in some way pretty bizarre ...

Go get beat up by BARRA HEAD

Free beer (for the dumb)! Oh yeah, time for another release party. Well, why not go out to Loppen for some free beer and free entrance - and President Fetch as opening act. Met up with Lars and had some indian food at Kashmir before we went out to meet Lars! It turned out to be an okay evening with a lot of different music. Five bands openend with each 10 min sets. Shelby Wolf was the most interesting. Southern Rock'ish highly inspired by Clutch. The were formerly known as The Bondage Corporation. I got their demo some time ago at the Play/Rec x-mas show at Musikcafeen and nice to see them live. The Presidents made a good performance with one 10 min long medley - nice way to use the short set. So in all a very nice evening and cool to meet such different people as Lasse, Jon A and Søren. And btw, as usual we didn't get in time to catch the free beers ... Barra Head Play/Rec Shelby Wolf
